Governor Jindal Signs Bill Aligning the Licensing of Daycares Across Louisiana

BATON ROUGE – Today, Governor Bobby Jindal signed legislation that will improve early childhood education in Louisiana by aligning the licensing of daycare centers throughout the state with Act 3. This bill is part of the Governor’s 2013 Legislative Package.

SB 222—authored by Senator Mike Walsworth— updates the licensing of early childhood learning centers and childcare facilities to bring this regulatory process in line with the new Early Childhood Care and Education Network, per Act 3.

Governor Jindal said, “This new law is great news for Louisiana's children. It will align the licensing of early childhood daycare and learning centers so they're in line with the new Early Childhood Care and Education Network, which is launching in 13 pilot sites this fall. Together, these reforms will reduce red tape within the current early childhood system and make it easier to navigate for parents and providers so that more of our children are better prepared for success in school.”

Under this bill, providers that receive public funds other than food and nutrition will be moved to a new licensing classification called Type III.  This classification maintains current health and safety regulations while being less burdensome to providers, recognizing that these providers are held to a higher bar for quality through the Early Childhood Care and Education Network.
