Ongoing: “Autographing History,” an exhibit of 54 documents, letters and receipts bearing the signatures of famous historical figures including presidents George Washington, John Adams and Thomas Jefferson, Alexander Hamilton and Aaron Burr, Benjamin Franklin, Napoleon Bonaparte, and many more. The collection on loan from Gloria B. Meyer of Shreveport and the late Charlton E. Meyer Jr. is on display at the Louisiana State Exhibit Museum, 3015 Greenwood Road. Ongoing: Yogie & Friends Exotic Cat Sanctuary, Louisiana’s only rescue for abused, neglected and unwanted large cats is open to the public on Saturdays only from noon to 5 p.m., weather permitting. Every third Saturday of the month: Southern Christian Writer’s Club, meets from 4:30-6:30 p.m. at the Calvary Abundant Life Tabernacle, corner of Bethel Road and Highway 84 East in Logansport, La. Its mission is to help and encourage writers share their love of Jesus with others through publishing. Writers in both religious and secular writing are welcome. Membership is $20 per year. Aug 3: PAC the Park Joint Venture Presents: Jazz in the Park. 2- 7 p.m. Chris Hayes Park and Recreation Center, 4300 Illinois Ave., Shreveport. The "Jazz in the Park" event will feature outstanding local Jazz bands, dancers and performers. The purpose of the event is a fund-raiser for the organizations that will help support the centers/parks, their youth and the neighborhood association activities. Also to help promote jazz, a musical genre born in the State of Louisiana. The organizers actively are seeking bands, vendors and corporate sponsors for the event. Aug. 12: Centenary Book Bazaar book drop. The Centenary College Muses will accept donations for the upcoming annual Book Bazaar, from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. at the Book House, located in Centenary Square, 108 East Kings Highway. Volunteers will be on hand to help unload donations of gently used books, compact discs, videotapes, DVDs, records and cassettes. Receipts will also be issued to those donors requesting them. The annual book bazaar is sponsored by the Centenary Muses with proceeds used to fund projects and programs for Centenary students. This year’s Bazaar will take place Sept. 6 and 7 in the Centenary Gold Dome.
Aug. 17th: Arts & Crab Fest. The 4 th annual Arts & Crabs Fest will take place on Saturday, Aug. 17, 2013, 5pm-8pm, at the Lake Charles Civic Center Coliseum, for those aged 21 and up only. Live music, an extensive Art Market, and interactive cultural activities will also accompany the event. Rusty Metoyer & The Zydeco Krush, one of the youngest and most entertaining zydeco groups in SWLA, will keep guests dancing all afternoon. As a “Top 20 Event in the Southeast” by the Southeast Tourism Society, Arts & Crabs Fest is quickly becoming a signature event for Southwest Louisiana and is consistently a sell-out.
