2013 Heritage & Harvest Tour Details Announced
Event will include tours of historic residences while highlighting businesses, churches, and other attractions along Highways 71 and 3049, Saturday, Sept. 28
The Red River Crossroads Historical & Cultural Association will present the 2013 Heritage & Harvest Tour, 10 a.m.-4 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 28, north of Shreveport along La. Hwy. 3049 and U.S. Hwy. 71. Local residents and visitors are invited to spend a day in the country, exploring the region’s history and culture while touring two historic residences and visiting area businesses, churches, and attractions.
Tickets are $10 each and may be purchased at Belcher Presbyterian Church (508 Gray Street in Belcher), Red River Crossroads Museum in Gilliam (located on Hwy. 3049 in Gilliam), or at either home featured on the tour.
The Heritage & Harvest Tour begins on Hwy. 3049 north of Shreveport, following heritage tour signage throughout the tour. Hwy. 71 North will also lead visitors to the tour route by turning at the Dixie, Belcher, or Gilliam turnoffs.
Two historic homes will be featured on the tour: Volentine/ Pittman Plantation, 6001 Dixie- Shreveport Road (Hwy. 3049) in Dixie and Lynn Plantation, 11580 Hwy. 3049 in Gilliam. Tour guides will be at each home, describing the history of the home and pointing out interesting features. At the Lynn Plantation stop, visitors will be invited to tour the historic commissary located on the grounds and a presentation of Native American artifacts will be displayed for viewing.
Other points of interest on the tour include historic churches, agricultural businesses and other unique, local businesses located along the route. Available to tour are: Red River Crossroads Museum (located inside the library in Gilliam); Gilliam Gin Company (located on Hwy. 3049 in Gilliam); The Wild Petunia, a special events venue (408 Caddo St. in Belcher); Belcher Presbyterian Church (on Gray Street/Hwy. 3049 in Belcher); Hale Grist Mill (15710 Hwy. 71 North in Hosston); Designs by Carol Quilt Shop (Hwy. 71 North in Mira); Capt. Fletcher E. Adams 357th Fighter Group Squadron Museum (Magnolia Lane in Ida); and much more.
A brochure containing a map of the Heritage & Harvest Tour route, as well as a complete listing of participating businesses and attractions, can be picked up at any Visitors’ Center will also be available at the Volentine/Pittman Plantation as well as the Lynn Plantation.
