BSO changes delinquent property tax collection
Bossier Sheriff Julian Whittington has contracted with Archon Information Systems, a New Orleans-based property tax collection business, to handle the collection of delinquent property taxes.
The Bossier Sheriff’s Office will continue to be the collector of property taxes, but beginning Feb. 1, Archon will begin notifying property owners who have yet to pay their 2013 ad valorem property taxes to the Bossier Sheriff’s Office. Archon will administer their collection efforts through CivicSource.com, The Property Auction Authority, who will contact delinquent tax payers to encourage payment of those delinquent assessments.
Properties that continue to have unpaid property taxes will be placed on a property tax sale list that will be administered sometime in May. In the past, the tax sale was held at the Bossier Parish Courthouse, but CivicSource.com will now administer the tax sale online. The online auction will allow access to a greater number of citizens who will now be able to bid on properties from the convenience of their own homes or places of business.
Archon will locate delinquent taxpayers, generate and mail all tax sale related events, process payments and provide customer service through its Louisiana-based call center. These new services will cost neither the Bossier Sheriff’s Office nor timely taxpayers anything.
“With Archon conducting the delinquent tax collection and property tax sale, this will save the Bossier Sheriff’s Office manpower and money, while at the same time allowing more people access to the bid process,” said Sheriff Whittington. “However, as the Ex-Officio Tax Collector of Bossier Parish, I will continue to administer the overall collection of property taxes.”
Starting Feb. 1, delinquent Bossier Parish property taxpayers will be assessed a 10% tax sale cost, which means delinquent taxpayers are essentially paying for the delinquent tax collections services.
Delinquent taxpayers will also incur a 1% interest penalty per month for unpaid property taxes as of Jan. 1, as well as other normally-incurred administrative costs, such as mail outs, advertisements and other administrative fees.
