Police investigate crash that killed driver
Shreveport police are investigating a Tuesday evening crash that killed a man in east Shreveport.
Latravious L. Stewart, 21, of the 1500 block of Doris Street in Shreveport, died at University Health Center from serious injuries he sustained after he was thrown from a sport utility vehicle which crashed into a utility pole on Creswell Avenue near Kings Highway.
Just before 9:45 p.m. Tuesday, Shreveport police officers were conducting a traffic stop on Creswell Avenue near Wilkinson Street after they saw the driver of a dark-colored Mercury Mountaineer commit a traffic violation.
Officers used their emergency lights and were able to get the motorist to stop.
When officers exited their patrol units to make contact with the operator, the SUV’s driver reportedly sped off, traveling southbound at a high rate of speed on Creswell Avenue toward Kings Highway.
As the fleeing driver approached the intersection of Kings Highway and Creswell Avenue, he apparently lost control of the vehicle, which spun and struck a utility pole.
It is believed that a second occupant may have fled on foot from the wrecked vehicle.
Witnesses described seeing a male suspect in dark clothing running from the scene on foot; however, no additional occupants in the crash have been identified.
Anyone with any information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 673-7373.
