Shreveport police investigate crash that injured baby - By Chris Redford

A 13-month old baby girl is said to have been seriously injured when the car she was riding in crashed into a pickup truck.

Shreveport police say the baby was not in a safety seat.  She was reportedly on her mother's lap just before the crash.

The crash happened just before five o'clock Tuesday in the 4600 block of Greenwood Road.

Investigators say the accident happened when a pickup truck pulling a trailer pulled out of a driveway onto Greenwood Road and collided with a Chevy Caprice driven by Myron Thomas.

Witnesses told police they observed what appeared to be a drag race between Thomas and the driver of a orange Chevrolet Impala identified as Calvin Beaner, Sr.

Authorities say the mother, Melvina Ealy, and her baby were both rushed to the hospital.  Police say Thomas was ticketed for no driver's license and no child restraint.  He was not seriously injured.

The driver of the pickup truck, Johnny Allen, was not seriously injured either.

The crash forced authorities to shut down parts of Greenwood Road.  The Shreveport Police Department's Hit & Run unit is investigating.
