Investigation underway in weekend slaying
Shreveport Police are investigating the death of a local woman who died after being shot at her north Shreveport home Sunday afternoon.
Just after 2:00 p.m. on June 29, 2014, Shreveport Police officers were called to a home located in the 3200 block of Sidney Street relative to a dispute. Upon the arrival of officers, it was learned the home owner, 55 year old Ruby Barnette, was suffering a single gunshot wound to the chest. Barnette was transported by the Shreveport Fire Department to University Health Medical Center where she later died.
Shreveport Police Violent Crimes detectives arrived on scene at the home launching an immediate review into the circumstances surrounding the shooting. Authorities detained an adult male inside the home in connection with the crime subsequently transporting him to police headquarters. The man was present inside the home along with the victim, two other adults and a small child when the shooting occurred. Information gathered during the early stages of the investigation suggested a verbal argument ensued between parties inside the home, which turned physical and led to weapons being produced. Based on information gathered, investigators do not believe Barnette was the intended target of the shooting and suspect she many have been shot during a struggle over a handgun. The man previously detained at the scene of the shooting was released in the wake of interviews with detectives; however the investigation into the shooting is still underway.
