Suspect arrested for possessing stolen dirt bike, ATV
A Mansfield man has been arrested for being in possession of a stolen dirt bike and ATV earlier this month.
On Aug. 9, DeSoto sheriff’s deputies conducted a traffic stop on an all-terrain vehicle and dirt bike for being on a public roadway. A deputy ran the vehicle identification numbers from both the ATV and the dirt bike, but they came back with no record. The deputy identified both operators and released them with a verbal warning.
On Aug. 11, the communications division received a delayed NCIC hit on the VIN of the dirt bike, which was entered by an agency in Texas. The communications division verified the information and passed the information on to the Criminal Investigations Division.
On Aug. 12, a detective contacted the deputy who made the traffic stop who identified the suspect riding the dirt bike.
Detectives located the suspect, identified as 19-year-old Alvin C. Thomas of Mansfield, La.
During an interview, Thomas admitted that he and another person had stolen the dirt bike from a residence in Texas.
Detectives were then able to locate the dirt bike at a residence in Mansfield.
Thomas was arrested and booked into the DeSoto Parish Detention Center on one count of illegal possession of stolen things.
Detectives then went to Thomas’ address to search for any other stolen vehicles. Consent was given to search a portable building on the property, and detectives recovered another ATV that was reported stolen out of Texas.
Thomas was charged with an additional count of illegal possession of stolen things.
