Man's death determined to be result of weekend vehicle crash

The Bossier City Police Department has learned that a man who died after riding in a taxi cab that crashed on I-20 early Sunday morning passed away due to injuries he sustained in the crash.

Christopher Chambers, 44, of Princeton was a passenger in an Action Taxi cab - a 2003 Chevrolet Impala - driven by Jessica Umphries, 32, of Bossier City when the vehicle left the roadway while heading westbound on Interstate 20 and crashed into a group of trees. The crash happened at approximately 3:15 a.m. Sunday. Due to the damage done to the car both occupants had to be extricated from the vehicle by Bossier City Fire Department personnel.

Umphries sustained injuries that at the time were believed to be life threatening and was taken to LSU Health Center in Shreveport where she was listed in serious but stable condition as of this afternoon.

Officers say Chambers was responsive and walking around after being removed from the car Sunday morning but he was soon taken to LSU Health Center by Fire Department personnel due to his condition. It was initially believed that Chambers may have suffered a heart attack. He died later that morning at the hospital and there was no immediate indication that he died as a result of the crash.   Today Bossier City Police learned an autopsy determined Chambers’ death was caused by internal injuries as the result of trauma.

As with vehicle crash due to the injuries involved, Bossier City police are investigating to see if alcohol was a factor pending blood test results from the driver. Police say there is no indication at this point in the investigation that alcohol was involved.
