Mayors proclaim April 7-13 Barbershop Harmony Week

PRESS RELEASE

Bossier City Mayor Lorenz Walker and Shreveport Mayor Cedric Glover have proclaimed 7 -13 April 2013 as “Barbershop Harmony Week” in concurrence with the 75 th anniversary of the Barbershop Harmony Society. Mayor Walker will present the proclamation to River Cities Jubilee Chorus, Northwest Louisiana's chapter of the Barbershop Harmony Society, on Apr 6, at 11:00 while performing at Bossier Power Equipment, 2101 Benton Road in Bossier City for their annual open house.

For more than 60 years the River Cities Jubilee Barbershop Chorus has been making sweet harmony in the Shreveport/ Bossier area. This year the chapter celebrates a landmark occa sion:

the 75 th Anniversary of the founding of the Barbershop Harmony Society. “We’re going to celebrate the way our singing society started.” Said chapter Vice President of Marketing Steven Klein. “ In April of 1938, a fellow named O.C. Cash in Tulsa, Oklahoma, invited a few acquaintances to get together to sing one evening, and the idea blew up out of control literally overnight.” Twenty six men attended that first meeting; within a month, more than 100 men were gathering and within a year the idea had spread like wildfire to more than 2,000 members from coast to coast and Canada.

Today, 75 years later there are more than 24,000 members of the Barbershop Harmony Society plus singers around the world in organizations from New Zealand, Sweden, and more. Sweden in particular has become a leading incubator of top talent: the current quartet champions, RING MAS- TERS, hail from Stockholm, as do the college champs, Lemon Squeezy and chorus medalists Zero8. “We’re part of something really special,” says Klein.

And on Thursday, April 11 the chorus will be singing with a lot of other friends; Quartet Champs, RING MASTERS will be appearing on NBC’s Today show to start the day and there will be celebra tions across the continent with choruses and quartets performing in government and civic locations everywhere.
