Lawrence was last seen alive around 5 p.m. Tuesday sitting in a lawn chair outside the fenced area of her backyard in the 2600 block of East Cavett Drive. She was not there two hours later when her roommate checked the heavily wooded area that slopes steeply to the water's edge.

Justin Bennett Howe, 22, of Connecticut was arrested after Bossier City police received a call from a concerned citizen who reported seeing a man, later identified as Howe, on the side of I-20 east of Airline Drive abusing a dog. The witness reported Howe at one point lifted the dog up off the ground by the leash, which appeared to choke the dog.

According to eyewitnesses and survivors of the incident, two vessels were leaving out to go fishing from their camp in the Negreet Creek area around 7:15 a.m. When the lead boat got up on plane, it left a wake that caused the second boat to pitch violently, ejecting McManus and the passenger into the water.
