Northwest Louisiana law enforcement officers will take to the streets of Bossier and Caddo Parishes to kick off the 2015 Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics Louisiana on Friday, May 15, with a ceremony starting at 9 a.m. on the Milam Street side of the Caddo Parish Courthouse.

Airline High School sophomore Yuliana Gutierrez recently had an exciting experience while at work at Nicky’s restaurant. A female patron went into labor, the EMT’s were called and they waited. They then received a call that the EMT’s would be delayed due to a traffic tie-up from an accident.

Bossier Sheriff Julian Whittington said 10 members of the Bossier Sheriff’s Corrections Emergency Response Team spent six days, May 1 – May 7, at a mock prison-riot event held at a decommissioned penitentiary in Moundsville, W. Va. “We’re very proud of the performance of our team,” said Whittington.

Entry for the event is $10 per participant and includes a T-shirt and lunch. The first 50 registrants will receive a complimentary rod and reel, and the first 100 youth registrants will receive a fishing goodie bag.

DeSoto Parish residents as well as the surrounding area will have the opportunity to be a part of something historic at the first ever hot air balloon show. The event will be filled with family fun for an entire weekend, and is sponsored by the DeSoto Parish Police Jury and DeSoto Parish Tourism Board.

What is the biggest attraction at the festival? Kalberg said it is probably the carnival. “But in the early hours of Saturday, they have face-painting, CeCe the Clown is going to be there, we have the children’s treasure hunt” on the carnival grounds, he said.

Doors will open at 6 p.m. with the feature beginning at 7 p.m. The event, which is also a benefit for the Strand Theatre, will include a meet-and-greet, a question-and-answer panel, book signings by local historians featured in the series, children’s activities and a commemorative program.

During Boating Education Lagniappe Day, LDWF will provide instructors for the National Association of State Boating Law Administrators (NASBLA) boating education course, NASBLA boating education certification, food and drinks, giveaways and door prizes all free of charge to the public.
