Some 4,000 Republican delegates and party officials are converging in Cleveland this week, with Democrats heading for Philadelphia the following week. The old process of picking national candidates in the proverbial smoke-filled room has gone by the wayside in favor of party primaries.

At approximately 9:56 p.m., patrol officers responded to a reported armed robbery at the Dollar General in the 2800 block of Jewella Avenue. Upon arrival, patrolmen contacted a witness who told them a male suspect burst into the store brandishing a black semiautomatic handgun and demanded money from the clerk at gunpoint.

Caddo deputies, along with Sheriff Steve Prator and Chief Deputy D.E. Stevens, were dispatched Sunday as part of the Louisiana Sheriff’s Association Task Force, which lends mutual aid to other sheriff’s offices during emergency. Prator is the Northern District Coordinator for the task force.

Bruce Wayne Duffy, who has prior convictions in 1975, 1977 and 1987 for drug and theft offenses, faces up to 10 years in prison, as well as a fine of up to $3,000, after he was found guilty of issuing a worthless check for $1,500 or more. He will be sentenced at a later date.

During the ordeal, the victims indicated the initial encounter began when they were approached by two white males, one of whom asked to use their phone. It is further alleged that one of the assailants struck one of the victims in the face, knocking him to the ground and running off on foot.
