Attempted robbery ends in suspect’s death

What began as an attempted armed robbery at a west Shreveport home ended with the death of the alleged suspect.

Just after 6:15 p.m. Sunday, Shreveport police were called to a home in the 3000 block of Morningside Drive in reference to an armed person.

When officers arrived, they made contact with persons at the home who told them that an unknown male suspect entered their residence armed with a shotgun.

The suspect reportedly demanded at gunpoint that the 63- year-old homeowner produce valuables thought to be stored inside a safe located within the residence.

At some point during the or-deal, the homeowner was able to gain access to a handgun she kept secured inside the safe.

When she retrieved the handgun, the homeowner was able to discharge the weapon in the direction of the suspect, who was struck once in the upper body.

After being shot, the suspect fled the residence on foot and collapsed a short distance away from the home.

No injuries were reported by the homeowner or other occupants inside the residence.

The suspect, identified as 16- year-old Devon Antonio Young of the 3000 block of Valley Ridge in Shreveport, was transported to University Health Medical Center, where he later died.

Shreveport police violent crimes and robbery detectives arrived on the scene and immediately launched an investigation into the matter. During the course of the probe, authorities were able to gather information and evidence linking Young to a previous burglary of the homeowner’s residence that occurred in mid- December.

The homeowner, along with other occupants inside the home, was interviewed by detectives; however, no charges have been filed in connection with the incident.

The case remains under investigation.
