Great American Cleanup set for April 12

Several local hospitality industry organizations have banded together to combat litter in Shreveport-Bossier by taking part in the Great American Cleanup on Saturday, April 12 .

This group includes representatives of the Shreveport-Bossier Hotel and Lodging Association, the Louisiana Restaurant Association, the Shreveport-Bossier Attractions Association and the Shreveport-Bossier Convention and Tourist Bureau.

Shreveport-Bossier’s Great American Cleanup activities are led by Shreveport Green. Members of the public are invited to form Great American Cleanup teams and join hundreds of others in removing trash from area businesses, parks, neighborhoods, vacant lots, and waterways.

Cash prizes will be awarded to teams collecting the most trash. Team registration is open, March 1-April 7. To register a team for the Great American Cleanup, call Casaundra Calloway of Shreveport Green at (318) 219- 1888 ext. 20. Hospitality industry professionals seeking to join in the effort may do so by contacting Christy Whitaker at cwhitaker@sbctb.org.

“This is our 22nd year of doing a citywide cleanup,” said Donna Curtis, executive director of Shreveport Green. “Although cleanups aren’t the clean answer, they are an immediate fix to beautifying the landscape of our community.”

Great American Cleanup teams will gather trash, 8-10:30 a.m., and will drop off what they’ve collected at the Louisiana State Fairgrounds, 8 a.m.-11:15 a.m. Following the dropoff, teams are encouraged to enjoy food, educational booths, and the announcement of cash prize winners at the Louisiana State Fairgrounds.

Shreveport Green will award prizes for the most unusual item of trash collected, as well as the largest amount of trash collected by a team member.

Hospitality industry participants will also be eligible to win a special P.R.I.D.E. Award, an annual award that recognizes outstanding members of the local tourism and hospitality industry during May, which is National Tourism Awareness Month. The 2014 P.R.I.D.E. Awards ceremony will be held on Thursday, May 15, at the Horseshoe Casino & Hotel Riverdome.

One million dollars down the drain to pay for a special session of the Louisiana legislature. And all for naught. The governor is hollering that the financial sky is falling and the state is in dire fiscal straights. Legislators protest that their hands are tied by too many constitutional dedications.

It was much to my amazement that literally hundreds of Ukrainian girls were actually interested in me. Throughout each day, I would receive e-mails from the agency, with each e-mail sending a message from a woman interested in dating me.
